Whirlpool wanted more recognition for getting clothes clean. Zeno saw Whirlpool's own engineers, research specialists and home economists as an untapped resource of expertise, and created the Whirlpool Institute of Fabric Science to position the company as a high–tech solution for ordinary laundry problems. The Institute became a magnet for media interest and was instrumental in helping Whirlpool launch new products like Calypso.
