The Social 7 is a weekly video podcast hosted by Zeno Group’s Digital Lifestyle Team (Nick Mendoza, Alex Miller, and Andrea Nowack) that recaps the week’s top seven stories in social media and marketing.  You can view past episodes at http://www.thesocial7.com or follow us on Twitter (@thesocial7).

Welcome to the fourth episode of The Social 7, a conversation on the Top 7 Stories in social media and marketing. We have a great line up for you today, including the brand new viral video of the week, detailed in the show notes below. Quick note – due to the holidays we will not issue an episode next week, however, we’ll be back the following week (Jan. 5) with a brand new episode. Happy holidays, and see you in 2009!

More details on all the stories, plus Tweet of the Week, Social Shutterbug, and Viral Video of the Week, after the jump…

Top 7 Stories:

7. Google Friend Connect and Twitter: Last week Twitter integrated with Google Connect – not Facebook Connect – however, sources say integration with Facebook Connect and MySpace is on its way.

6. Mashable Open Web Award Winners: After several weeks of anticipation, the results for Mashable’s Open Web Awards have finally been posted. The people’s choice winners – announced early last week – include Netlog for mainstream and large scale social networks, Diigo in the social bookmarking category, and Peter Shankman’s Help A Reporter Out in social news. If you’d like to see a full list of winners, visit Mashable’s article here.

5. Social Media Predictions 2009 – Last week, social media maven Peter Kim issued a report detailing his social media predictions for 2009. For his report, he talked to a number of different influencers in the space, including Chris Brogan, Jason Falls and Charlene Li.

4. MySpace ‘Top 8’s of 2008′ – You saw Yahoo’s list of most popular search terms a few weeks ago; now it’s MySpace’s turn. Last week the company issued a detailed list of most populars, including top 8 songs streamed on MySpace Music, top 8 video search terms, and even top 8 profile themes.

3. IWearYourTShirt – Here at Social 7, we love unique viral ideas, and what’s more out of the box than… getting paid to wear company T-shirts? Yes, it’s true. A man by the name of Jason Sadler launched a plan where companies can pay him to wear their shirt for a day. He’ll start with $1 for Jan. 1, and end with Dec. 31 for $365, so if he sells out the entire year (and he is already well on his way) he has the potential to earn $66,795 for the year. If this plan has you thinking, “why the heck didn’t I think of that?!” join the crowd!

2. Sponsored Blog Posts: Last week, a number of blog posts circulated the Web on the sponsored blog posts controversy, initiated by Chris Brogan’s sponsored K-Mart post and Jeremiah Owyang’s response. What are your thoughts on sponsored blog posts? (Editors Note: Additional information has emerged since the original shooting of the episode: Jeremiah Owyang was not criticizing Chris Brogan for the sponsored post, but rather stating that he does not believe it to be a sustainable model. Please read his response (linked above) for his explanation.)

1. LinkedIn CEO is Back: After handing over the reins of his company to Dan Nye in early 2007, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman is back to reclaim his former role, bringing Yahoo’s Jeff Weiner with him as interim president. LinkedIn has seen a 36 percent growth in the past six months, and in a down economy these two men will have a lot on their hands as they move into 2009.

Tweet of the Week:

The first tweet from Jeremiah Owyang that sparked the controversy, and confusion, over the sponsored blog posts:

Social Shutterbug of the Week:

Remember how we talked about people liking cute puppies in episode 3? Here’s another cute puppy for you today, and a (cute) homeless man? Kevin Rose sent a tweet about this photo a few days ago, and so far it has been dug more than 4,500 times.

Viral Video of the Week:

It’s always a testament to your term as President when people in other countries warmly welcome you with shoes. Last week during President Bush’s visit to Iraq, a journalist hawked his shoe at Bush, instigating an uproar in the press room… and a viral video phenomenon.
